Oilfield fishing services on an aging well aren’t fundamentally different from any other fishing job. Until they are. You pull your tools, you do your assessment, you run your program. Then something doesn’t pull smooth. There’s a tight spot that wasn’t in the report. There’s corrosion scale on the tubing in a place it has no business being. And what looked like a straightforward job starts to look like something else.
Aging wells don’t fail cleanly; they accumulate. Casing that’s been leaking quietly for years. Tubing that’s been deteriorating from the outside in. Problems that operators watched and waited on because the well was still producing enough to leave it alone. By the time someone calls for oilfield fishing services, the original problem often isn’t the only problem. It’s just the one that finally made the call unavoidable.
What Aging Looks Like Downhole
The well doesn’t announce its condition. You find out when you go in.
Tubing should pull smooth and look uniform. Corrosion from top to bottom is a typical wellbore situation, expected on older production and manageable. What’s not typical is corrosion that’s concentrated in one zone: scale in a 50-foot stretch in the middle of the wellbore where it has no reason to be. That pattern tells you something specific. There’s a casing leak right at that interval, and corrosive fluid has been coming in at that slot, likely for a long time.
The same goes for feel. If your tools bump something every 30 feet pulling out of the hole, that’s not friction. That could be parted casing. You’re looking and feeling for anything out of the ordinary, because the ordinary version of this well (clean pulls, uniform tubulars, no surprises) is what a healthy one feels like. Departures from that are information.
A tight spot coming out of the hole when you’re pulling an anchor or packer is another signal. No intentional perforations at that depth, nothing in the records that explains it. That points to a casing problem. What kind exactly still needs to be determined, but you’ve got your first clue, and you adjust from there.
The San Andres formation is worth naming specifically. It’s one of the most productive zones in the Permian basin and one of the most corrosive. Casing corrosion in the San Andres is a known problem throughout the Permian, but the degree of damage varies and isn’t always visible until you’re working the well.
One thing aging wells have going for them: they’re generally safer to work on than new ones. Years of production deplete bottom hole pressure. An older stripper well that’s been pumping for decades isn’t going to do anything unexpected under pressure. It doesn’t have the pressure left to do it. New horizontal wells with miles of open pay zone are a different situation entirely. More fluid, more pressure, more volatility. Working an older vertical well is less like defusing something and more like working on equipment that’s tired. The hazards are different, and in some ways more manageable, but that doesn’t mean the job is simple.
When One Problem Becomes Two
The initial approach on an aging well is the same as on any other. You gather the wellbore details: casing sizes, tubing sizes, total depth, vertical depth, bottom hole pressures. Then you build your program. You don’t assume the well is complicated just because it’s old. You let what you find tell you that.
What you find, on older wells, is often more than you were called for.
Casing corrosion is rarely the problem you called about. It’s the condition that’s been developing for years underneath the problem. If casing in a highly corrosive zone has been in the ground long enough, especially without solid cement behind it, it degrades. It pits. In bad cases it parts, or gets so compromised you can’t pass tools through it. You called about a stuck ESP or parted tubing at a certain depth. Nobody knew there was a bad section of casing 1,000 feet above it until tools started going in the hole.
When that happens, the job scope changes. You have to fix the casing problem before you can address the original fish. That means building specialty mills to open the hole back up through the bad interval, then continuing down to the initial target. Now it’s a longer job, more equipment, and a conversation nobody expected to be having. Unplanned downtime in the Permian Basin carries a steep price.
Injection wells are a reliable indicator that you’re dealing with older production. Water flooding and CO2 flooding (injecting fluid into a formation to raise depleted bottom hole pressure and push oil toward producers) are techniques associated with mature fields. You don’t see them on new development. When you get a call about an injection well, you already know something about the age of that production and what you’re likely to find.
How the Fishing Job Changes on an Older Well
What changes on an aging well isn’t the initial approach. It’s contingency planning. And the tooling.
Older wells sometimes have non-standard wellbore geometry. Wells drilled before API standards were fully established, some going back to the 1940s, can have casing sizes and wellhead configurations that don’t match anything in a modern catalog. You come across oddball stuff. Tools that work fine in a standard-dimension well won’t make it past certain sections. The answer is to modify what you have or build what you need:
- Turning down overshots
- Fabricating short catches
- Machining something specific to the geometry of that particular wellbore

The Cost of Waiting
Low-producing wells are easy to defer. If a well isn’t generating much revenue, the threshold for spending money on it gets higher. A known issue gets watched. A slow decline gets tolerated. And then something happens that makes the call unavoidable. A stuck ESP, parted tubing, a casing problem that’s progressed far enough that production stops.
What shows up on a well that’s been left along long enough:
- Corrosion on surface equipment that wasn’t there before
- Tubing that’s partially collapsed
- Rods that weren’t pulled and have been sitting in the hole
Deferred maintenance doesn’t eliminate the problem. It usually compounds it.
That said, the decision isn’t always clear-cut. Stripper wells are older vertical producers operating at low volumes, and they often exist in a narrow margin where repair costs and production revenue are close enough that every job is a judgement call. The well might be fixable. Whether fixing it makes financial sense is a different question. There are also regulatory dimensions that influence the decision on aging wells:

- Production in New Mexico outside of federal land is regulated by the Oil Conservation Division (OCD)
- Texas production is overseen by the Texas Railroad Commission
If a leased well isn’t producing, the lease terms may require action, or the lease itself may be at risk.
Plugging is the endpoint for wells that can’t be saved. And plugging jobs on older wells often require oilfield fishing services of their own. Tools and debris have to come out of the hole before the well can be properly abandoned. It’s not a simple job even when the decision to plug has already been made.
