When the Fish Isn’t What Anyone Expected
A hard job and a weird job aren’t the same thing. Hard is a matter of depth, pressure, and well condition. Weird is recovering something that was never supposed to be there at all.
On one job, the team fished cable tool drilling equipment out of a well that hadn’t been touched in decades. No records went back far enough to explain it. The tools had been sitting downhole since a drilling method that stopped being standard practice generations ago. Once the team saw what had come up, the source of the problem made sense immediately. Getting to that point took pulling a piece of history nobody knew still down there.
Other jobs start with information that simply doesn’t hold up. On one, the operator’s data pointed to a standard overshot. The dimensions didn’t match anything that should have been run in that well. Rather than trust numbers that didn’t add up, the team worked the problem from the other direction: tracked down the equipment supplier directly and confirmed what had been sold and run downhole. The customer’s paperwork had it wrong. The well told the real story.

What Comes Out of a Re-Entry
Re-entry wells are their own category. An operator buys a plugged well, drills out the plugs, and goes back to work it. Before that well was sealed the first time, somebody cleared a rig floor. Not always carefully.
In roughly 20-30% of re-entry jobs, something ends up downhole that has nothing to do with drilling or completions at all. Bolts, nuts, aluminum cans, chains, pump parts, section of telephone pole. One well produced a Christmas tree. The lights were still on it.
None of that is drilling debris. It’s what happens when a rig floor gets cleaned and everything on it ends up in the hole instead of a dumpster. That’s worth knowing before a re-entry: the record from the last operator may show what was drilled. It won’t show what got left behind.
When Physics Does Something You Don’t Expect
Steel doesn’t behave the way people assume once enough force gets involved. A string of pipe weighing 10,000 points, dropped and left to fall, can hit speeds near 500 miles per hour by the time it reaches bottom. At that speed, half-inch-thick steel collars don’t just bend. They mash flat, corkscrew, and reshape themselves into dimensions that shouldn’t be physically possible for that grade of pipe. Recovering a fish in that condition means working with steel that no longer matches any spec sheet, because the well itself rewrote the numbers.
Other jobs turn strange in quieter ways. The team was recovering tubing when every single collar had split. By any normal read, that string should have come apart joint by joint. Instead, the split collars held on long enough to bring up five or six joints at a time. No obvious reason for it. Just steel behaving in a way that’s hard to explain.
That’s where the team’s approach to strange jobs matter more than any single tool. Depth changing for no clear reason is one of the first signs something’s off. When that happens, the instinct isn’t to change strategy on the spot. It’s to stay with what’s most likely, keep recovering the well one piece at a time, and let the pattern reveal itself. Chase a theory too early and the result is chasing ghosts instead of fixing a well. Somewhere down the line, every piece pulled up makes sense. It just takes enough of them out of the hole to see it.
A Pattern Without A Clear Answer
Some wells produce more strange jobs than others, and not every pattern has an obvious cause. One pad in particular has stood out over the years: five wells, and nearly every time the crew rigged up, something unexpected turned up, whether downhole or in the equipment itself. Nothing on paper explains why that pad in particular runs differently than the ones around it.
Built on Location
Not every strange job means a return trip to the shop. Field welding lets the team modify a tool on location in about 20 minutes when the standard piece doesn’t quite fit the well. Roughly 10-15% of jobs call for some version of this: a quick modification built for that specific hole, that specific problem, on that specific day. Machine work still has to come back to town. But a lot of what makes a fishing job work isn’t which tool showed up on the truck from the rental tools and BOP equipment inventory. It’s the ability to build the one the well needs.
Tubing can be bent to match a well’s conditions in the field, too, though that one only goes in a single direction. Once it’s bent, it stays that way.
It’s Judgment, Not Luck
Most of what makes a job strange isn’t luck, good or bad. It’s a well with a history nobody fully knows, physics doing something counterintuitive under enough pressure, or debris that has nothing to do with the well itself. What separates a fishing crew that handles it from one that doesn’t isn’t luck either. It’s the oilfield fishing tools and year of judgment that let a team read a strange situation instead of guessing at it.
